Tutoring for Success

In August 2009 I retired from teaching and decided to do two things that were very important to me: Begin my own tutoring business and volunteer in my neighborhood elementary schools.

My Teaching Background and Training
I am a Colorado Certified Teacher with 20+ years of teaching experience. I have extensive training and experience in working with 'struggling readers and writers' at the elementary level.

During my years at Boston University while acquiring my Master degree in Deaf Education I received invaluable training in the early stages of language acquisition in hearing children and the cognitive processes used when learning to read and write.

Since my days in Massachusetts I received additional training at Arizona State University, completing a 2 year program with the Collaborative Literacy Intervention Project (CLIP), working on a 1:1 basis with first grade students who were not progressing in reading.  During the second year, I conducted a pilot program in using the methods of CLIP with small groups of first graders in a pull-out model.

Returning to Colorado, I was employed at a reading clinic in Englewood, CO as a reading tutor and received invaluable training on how to zoom-in on reading and vocabulary difficulties in children aged 6-12.

When I took a teaching position with Aurora Public Schools in the Title I department as a reading intervention teacher, I again received further training and experience in the identification of children with difficulties in learning to read and how to address their specific needs using a multi-sensory approach among other techniques and strategies.

Finally I received my Endorsement in Teaching the Linguistically Diverse Learner from Regis University in August 2005.

The various trainings I've acquired along with years of experience in public and charter schools have provided me with the skill to differentiate my instruction to best suit the needs of struggling readers.
